The Great and Awesome Day of the Lord!

Series: Malachi Scripture: Malachi 4:1–6

SONGS

The Glories of Calvary

Verse 1

Lord You're calling me to come

And behold the wondrous cross

To explore the depths of grace

That came to me at such a cost

Where Your boundless love

Conquered my boundless sin

And mercy's arms were opened wide

Chorus

My heart is filled with a thousand songs

Proclaiming the glories of Calvary

With every breath

Lord how I long to sing of Jesus

Who died for me

Lord take me deeper

Into the glories of Calvary

Verse 2

Sinners find eternal joy

In the triumph of Your wounds

By our Savior's crimson flow

Holy wrath has been removed

And Your saints below

Join with Your saints above

Rejoicing in the risen Lamb

Name Above All Names

Verse 1

From the brightness of His glory

Jesus the Son of God descends

Takes on the nature of a servant

Jesus obedient to death

The Father willed to crush Him

As a sacrifice for sin

He satisfied God's justice

And in vict'ry rose again

Chorus

You are highly exalted

Name above all names worthy of all praise

You are reigning in glory

Jesus You're the King over everything

(Exalted to the highest place)

(Given the name above all other names)

Verse 2

The tomb is empty Christ has risen

Jesus the Lamb once crucified

The angels never cease to worship

Jesus in heaven glorified

To Him belongs the power

The wisdom might and strength

All glory and dominion

To the Lord of every age

Bridge

Our knees will bow

Our tongues proclaim

That You are Lord of all

Our knees will bow

Our tongues proclaim

That You are Lord of all

— SERMON OUTLINE —

Title:THE GREAT AND AWESOME DAY OF THE LORD

Kids' Words: Judgement, Healing, Rejoicing, Victory

Points:

    I.   The Great and Awesome Day is Coming (vv. 1–3)

II.  We Must Prepare for That Day (vv. 4–6)

Main Idea:The Day of the Lord will bring judgment and the resurrection of Jesus Christ is our hope for vindication in that Great and Awesome Day.

Quote: "The Bible is a book about Jesus and when we take our eyes off Jesus we lose our way around the Bible. In the Old Testament, Jesus is predicted. In the Gospels, Jesus is revealed. In the Acts of the Apostles, Jesus is preached. In the Epistles, Jesus is explained. And in the book of Revelation, Jesus is expected." - Alistair Begg

I. The Great and Awesome Day is Coming (vv. 1–3)

Our hope in Christ and His Resurrection is crucial because: There Will Be Judgment (v. 1)

Quote: This judgment began when Jesus went to the cross and was judged in place of His elect. And it will be completed on this great and awesome day God is preparing!

First - Our hope in Christ and His Resurrection is vital because: There Will Be Healing (v. 2a)

Quote: On this day, Jesus, who is the light of the world, will rise up and bring about healing and restoration, not just to his followers but to all of God’s creation. And the healing promised in this verse will be complete. This healing will be physical, spiritual, and emotional and it will be permanent. - Taylor and Clendenen

Second - Our hope in Christ and His Resurrection is essential because: There Will Be Rejoicing (v. 2b)

Third - Our hope in Christ and His Resurrection is significant because: There will be Victory (v. 3)

II. We Must Prepare for That Day (vv. 4–6)

First - By Heeding God’s Word (v. 4)

Second - By Heeding the Call to Repent and Believe (vv. 5–6)

SONGS

Old Rugged Cross

Verse 1

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross

The emblem of suff'ring and shame

And I love that old cross where the dearest and best

For a world of lost sinners was slain

Chorus

So I'll cherish the old rugged cross

Till my trophies at last I lay down

I will cling to the old rugged cross

And exchange it some day for a crown

Verse 2

O the old rugged cross so despised by the world

Has a wondrous attraction for me

For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above

To bear it to dark Calvary

Verse 3

In the old rugged cross stained with blood so divine

A wondrous beauty I see

For 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died

To pardon and sanctify me

Verse 4

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true

Its shame and reproach gladly bear

Then He'll call me some day to my home far away

Where His glory forever I'll share

Eternal Praise

Verse 1

What joyful thoughts does heaven bring

Where righteous ones will worship Thee

No sadness, fear, or suffering

But joyful cries to the King of Kings

What sacrifice the Father made

To crush the Son who bore our shame

Yet raised Him up that glorious day

To give us hope and a holy name

Pre-Chorus

O praise the Lamb, for sinners slain

Who wrote with blood our eternal praise

Let the nations of the earth proclaim, "Hallelujah!"

Chorus

O praise the name of Jesus

Our song forever shall be

Let the anthem of salvation

Be the song that we shall sing

Verse 2

What deepened wounds have saved our souls

What blood that washed our sins of old

What precious hands have ransomed men

And brought us to Himself again

What hope is in our heavenly home

Where we will bow at our Father's throne

And walk with Him on streets of gold

And kiss the Christ we long to hold
